Emirates Airline Starts Online Check-In Service

Emirates Airline has made announcement about the recommencement of its online check-in service, affected by the interruption in flights because of residue from Iceland's volcano, from Monday.

The United Arab Emirates-based airline stated that it would run additional services on several routes to get thousands of stranded riders their destination.

Richard Vaughan, Emirates' divisional senior vice president, stated, "We are continually assessing every option available as we strive to resume normal service across the network."

"After several days of additional services to the UK, including three extra flights to Gatwick today, our services to Europe are nearing business as usual. We are doing absolutely everything we can to get them to their final destination," Mr. Richard added.

Emirates is the national airline of Dubai, UAE and runs approx 2200 passenger flights every week, from its hub at Dubai International Airport Terminal 3, to 106 destinations in 60 nations across 6 continents. (With Inputs from Agencies)

Kingfisher Airlines and indigo share same status

Aviation industry is marked with two airlines on the second position. Kingfisher and IndiGo airlines share same status with market share of 18.6% in December. The top most position is booked by Jet Airways with the market share of 25%.

About 147.05 lakh fliers were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2010, which are more than the prior three quarters of 2010, as per the data revealed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

December alone had shown a rise of 16% in the air traffic, taking Indigo ahead from Air India. With these figures Air India holds the third position in the market share with 25.89 lakh passengers.

Amber Dubey, director (Aerospace and Defence), global consultancy firm KPMG said that IndiGo has reached this position by following and maintaining the right fundamentals and if this airline continue to carry in this manner then it won't be surprised to see the low-cost carrier (LCC) at number one position.

Some other aviation experts hold another view point on the performance of IndiGo, they said that data released by DGCA only shows its OTP (on time performance), a measure of efficiency, as high as 85% for 2010 only. Another reason for reaching number two spot is its least cancellation rate for the entire year at 0.8%.

The DGCA figures also show that 2010 have shown a progress of 18.7% with 520.21 lakh passengers, with December contributing alone with the growth of 19% with 147.05 lakh passengers.

December alone has witnessed 52 lakh flying in the country and beaten the November record of RS48.7 lakh.

Aviation minister Praful Patel is very delighted with the data and said that India has the potential to become one of the leading aviation markets in the world in the coming years. The spark for growth in this industry arises due to intense competition and need of expansion in the infrastructure.

The only threat that is torturing the aviation industry is the hike in the fuel prices. Among increasing jet fuel prices, airlines have announced that fares will be increased to cover this expense and once again price sensitive people will prefer other modes of transport and aviation will suffer.

Ford Focus Race Concept

Ford likes to tout the 2012 Focus' global credentials; because this is the first time the compact sedan and hatchback will be offered with minimal changes in nearly every market the Blue Oval operates. Interestingly, Ford has taken a similar approach with the racing version of the Focus, which it says is designed to compete in all kinds of touring car racing both in the United States and throughout the rest of the world.

Power, predictably, will come from a tuned version of the 2.0-liter Eco Boost engine that we'll see in the upcoming Focus ST. You'll find AST performance coil-over adjustable dampers at each corner holding up anthracite 18-inch wheels and Hoosier race tires. Other suspension bits include sway bars from Ford Racing with adjustable end links and front brakes with 320-millimeter two-piece rotors and race pads.

Inside, a full FIA-certified roll cage is included, along with Recaro seats with six-point racing harnesses and a full electronics package for keeping track of essential data. Interestingly, Ford says it teamed up with a number of professional private racing teams to develop its Focus Race package, which means it should be highly adaptable to multiple series and formats.

This car's first appearance in competition will be at the 2011 British Touring Car Championship, but it will also circle tracks in China and at the 24-hour race at Nürburgring in Germany. Even more importantly, Ford says the upcoming 2012 Focus ST will benefit from the experience gained by racing its track-developed sibling.

In addition to the Focus Race Car Concept, also hitting the LA Auto Show floor will be three Focus models tuned with various aftermarket products. One will come from Ford's own Vehicle Personalization group while the others will be presented by FSWerks and 3dCarbon, respectively.

Ford to introduce Kuga concept in Detroit

A source within Ford Motor Company has reportedly revealed that a near-production crossover concept will be heading to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. When this concept vehicle takes its production shape, it will serve as the replacement for the venerable Ford Escape and Kuga crossovers. Based off of the 2012 Focus' platform, the new Escape/Kuga is expected to go into production in the second half of 2012 and be sold as a 2013 model in the United States. At this time, it is unclear as to whether or not Ford will keep both the Escape and Kuga names in the vehicles' respective markets.

The automaker's "One Ford" global product strategy would call for a single name for vehicles sold in different regions, and the Blue Oval team will surely face a similar problem with the redesigned Fusion and Mondeo sedans in the near term.

Chevrolet new car to be called Sonic

General Motors has officially announced that its all-new B-segment car will be called Sonic, marking the end of the Aveo nameplate here in the United States. We first saw the 2012 Aveo at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year, and the vehicle will officially start production sometime in 2011 at GM's Orion Assembly Center in Michigan. The Sonic nameplate will only be used in the United States , Canada and Mexico; the car destined for other markets will retain the Aveo name. Chris Perry, GM's vice president for Chevrolet U.S. marketing explains the reason for the name change here in North America:

"The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name. The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about."

If GM really wants to capture some youth, we suggest offering the Sonic in "Hedgehog Blue."

This is one fabulous looking concept car. Every once in a while a concept comes along that is not only fabulous in its plan, but fabulous in its rendering as well. Take a look at the realism in these digital illustrations and tell me you aren’t impressed by their excellence. Then lemme tell you about this car. It’s called the Astrum Meera, and it features several elements which play a role in safety, sustainability, and what the creators call “practical design.”

Practical design! Fa! Who could need such a thing! There are some people (people with lots of money in their pockets) who love practical design, that is, design that isn’t that far away from the real world, who are just ready and raring to go toss money around – practical designers, take a peek.

This car has built-in sensors near the exhaust that track the levels of CO2 and alert the driver should they be exceeding normal range. It’s got wheel rims which work with magnetic levitation, making the car fantastically light and fast. The mirrors on the sides of the car move down inside the vehicle, hiding when in park, rolling back out when the car starts up (my uncle use to have a car with headlights like this – so sweet!) These same mirrors have built-in cameras that display inside the car, allowing the driver sight without turning their head – especially useful in inclement weather.

And on top of all that, this mad maniac of a car looks really radical and totally tubular. It looks spectacular, yet real. I’m sure that was the designers intent. Rippin roaring good time of an auto.

Called the ‘POP’, Kia’s three-meter, three-seater was styled at Kia’s Russelsheim design studio where head of design Peter Schreyer has been husbanding the revitalization of the Kia family DNA.

New Audi R18 LMP1 sports car divulge

Since its first attempt in 1999, Audi has won the Le Mans 24 hour race nine times with the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI, equaling Ferrari’s all-time win record. Last Friday it unveiled the new R18, a closed carbon fiber monocoque coupe specifically developed for Le Mans with a 3.7-liter V6 TDI engine and another first for endurance racing – all-LED headlights. Recognizing that aerodynamic efficiency will be even more important at Le Mans than it was in the past, the new R18 marks the first time since 1999 that Audi will contest the world’s oldest endurance race with a closed coupe. Unlike that of the closed Le Mans prototypes, which consisted of two halves, the carbon fiber monocoque chassis of the R18 features a single-component design that reduces weight and increases stiffness.

The chassis and aerodynamics of the R18 take much of their inspiration from the R8, the R10 TDI and R15 TDI, however the fitting of identically sized front and rear wheels, which allows for a more balanced weight distribution, is a first for an Audi Le Mans sports car.

With rule makers looking to achieve a substantial reduction of engine power in 2011, significantly smaller engines than those used before will be prescribed. This has led to Audi retaining the diesel concept that saw its first victorious outing in 2006 with a 3.7-liter V6 TDI unit with a six-speed transmission that has been specifically modified for use with the smaller engine.

Another first for the new R18 is the inclusion of all-LED headlights. Aside from optimizing the amount of light produced at night, during the daytime the LEDs form the shape of a “1” which is apparently intended to “inspire associations with Audi’s historic brand logo.” The company says the next generation headlights will also be prepared for future use in production vehicles – although the “1” formation seems unlikely to make the transition.

Development of the new R18 started in mid 2009 and the V6 TDI engine has been running on the dynometers since the summer of 2010. The car itself completed its first test on a racetrack at the end of November with its racing debut planned for the Spa-Francorchamps 6 Hours in Belgium on May 8, 2011.

Prior to that, the new R18 prototype will do its first laps on the Le Mans track during the official test day on April 24, 2011, to gather data ahead of the race on June 11 and 12, where Audi is planning to field test three R18 cars, which will be entered by Audi Sport Team Joest.

In an attempt to improve city commutation, Tanzanian designer Walter Robert has developed a future taxi system named the “Renault Runner” that makes most out of renewable sources of energy to sustain the urban environment and make cities a better place to live.

Featuring transparent solar panel windows to harness solar power and provide panoramic view of the surroundings, the urban taxi also saves space by conjoining to each other and forming a train. The Runner Train can connect up to three cabins with secure wireless commands. Running on multi-level hubless dynamo wheels, the Renault Runner also includes a power converter to accumulate kinetic energy as an added source of power, while intelligent LED lights make it an entirely zero-emission vehicle.

BMW's new 1 series M luxury pocket projectile

There's a new member of the racetrack-inspired BMW M club – the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. While the compact 2-door might be pitched at a broader "everyday use" market than its predecessors, fans who fear the diluting of the M series pedigree need not worry, as high-performance is still high-priority. The M Coupe packs a 250 kW/340 bhp punch from its in-line 6-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine (that's 25% more than the original M1 produced in the late 70's) and reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standing start in 4.9 seconds.

The automotive luxury and performance markets have traditionally been based around larger automobiles, and we're not entirely sure why. It's understandable that the luxury market might have some sort of "bigger is better" thing happening, but the performance market should logically be seeking smaller and lighter vehicles as its basis - smaller cars have less frontal area, change direction more easily, stop better, accelerate harder for the same power, and handle better into the bargain.

It's hence not all that much of a stretch that the M-Technik logo should finally grace the 1 Series Beemers, particularly when you consider that the entire BMW range can now be purchased in M configuration.

It's also interesting to see BMW attempting to skirt around the use of the M1 name. The original M1 was a far cry from this vehicle, and though it should logically inherit the name to complete the nomenclature protocol established three decades ago, it's unlikely given the heritage which BMW attaches to the legendary M1 homologation special of the late seventies which was built by Lamborghini for BMW.

Just as the 1 series gives aspiring BMW owners an entry level, the new BMW 1 Series M Coupé paves the way for a wider audience to appreciate M car ownership when it goes on sale in May 2011.

The 1 Series M Coupé has at its heart a high revving, in-line six-cylinder engine with twin turbocharger, direct injection technology and double VANOS variable valve timing, enabling it to develop a maximum output of 340 hp. This offers the remarkable acceleration performance of 4.9 seconds from zero to 62mph (0-100 km/h) and turbo lag has been minimized by using small turbos that remain active at low engine speeds (and hence exhaust pressures), so there's no delay in getting the power to the rear wheels when you stick your boot in - and there's plenty available as the maximum torque of 450Nm is produced from as little as 1,500rpm all the way to 4,500 rpm. This figure can be increased by another 50Nm when the car is under full throttle by means of an overboost function.

The advantages of a high performance motor in a small body become obvious on the racetrack - BMW expects the new M1 (there, we've said it), to be significantly faster around the Nürburgring Nordschleife than the previous generation E46 BMW M3.

The engine management system offers two performance curves: in standard mode the M1 offers a torquey, easy-to-drive street car, while activating the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) using the button on the steering wheel, the engine immediately becomes a fire-breather.

The cooling system of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé has been designed for constant high load, high speed track driving, through the use of an additional separate radiator and a specific air duct to deal with the increased thermal stress which can occur when driving in a particularly sporty style on the race track.

The efforts made in optimizing performance and efficiency are also reflected in a newly developed dual-mass flywheel. Its lightweight construction benefits the engine's efficiency and it also has an increased solidity which is able to cope with the six-cylinder engine’s high level of torque.

In addition, EfficientDynamics measures such as brake energy regeneration and needs-based control of auxiliary units ensure that recorded combined fuel consumption is 29.4mpg and CO2 emissions are 224g/km.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé is only offered with a six-speed manual transmission, specially designed to work with high-torque engines. This newly developed transmission is operated using a very short-shift M gearshift lever.

The chassis of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé has been tested using BMW M GmbH's racing-oriented development process, and uses numerous key components, originally conceived for the BMW M3, have been modified for use in this car.

Light weight is of course vital and the latest M car tips the scales at 1,495kgs courtesy of the extensive use of aluminum. The double pivot front axle and the five-link rear axle are made almost entirely of aluminum. Tubular stabilisers, axle links made of forged aluminum and aluminum shock absorbers round off the lightweight construction concept.

With chassis technology derived directly from motor racing, a power-to-weight ratio of 227 hp/tonne has been achieved. The footprint of the car is bigger than a standard BMW 1 Series Coupé with it being 55 mm wider than the BMW 135i Coupé. The width of 1,803 mm is the result of optimization of the front and rear axle to enhance driving dynamics.

As standard, BMW 1 Series M Coupé comes with Variable M differential lock, compound brakes, DSC with MDM and M Servotronic. The Variable M differential lock responds to differences in rotational speeds in the rear wheels, redirecting torque within a fraction of a second for optimum traction and maximum thrust on slippery surfaces and when accelerating out of bends.

The M-specific compound high-performance brake system of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé uses inner-vented and perforated discs with a diameter of 360mm at the front and 350mm at the rear, providing impressive stability even under extreme stress, as well as being extremely light.

Rack-and-pinion steering is fitted with Servotronic hydraulic power steering while the Dynamic Stability Control system that includes elements such as an anti-slip control function (ASC), the brake assistant Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), a drive-off assistant, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), an anti-fading function and a dry brake function is also standard. The driver can activate M Dynamic Mode (MDM) on the instrument panel, raising the point at which the driving stability control system intervenes.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupe goes on sale in May 2011 priced at GBP39,990 plus on road costs.

Wolfgang Armbrecht, head of BMW's Mini brand recently hinted that a smaller small car may be in the works. In an interview with Germany's Financial Times Deutschland, Ampbrecht admitted that Mini may develop a small car for parent company BMW. If the thought of a Mini Mini crossed with BMW parts makes you excited, you're not alone. Who could say 'No' to the Ultimate Go-Karting Machine? As of yet however, there are no reports of a build timeline or potential specs, but a glimpse of what's to come is said to be earmarked for next month's Detroit Auto Show.
